Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
