European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
