RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
