Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
